A Brief History:

Samuel Bowditch Emery Smith, was born on the night of June 11th, 1987 during game five of the NBA finals between the LA Lakers and the Boston Celtics. He was the second and final child of Jonathan and Katherine Smith being born exactly four years and six months after his older brother Andrew. The Smith boys were raised in the small suburban town of North Attleboro. A town in which they resided until the year 2000, when change was brought upon them, forcing them far across town into the neighboring city of Attleboro.

About me:

My name is Sam. I am a sophomore at the Wentworth Institute of Technology, studying Industrial Design. After graduating high school in 2005, I set my sights on becoming a graphic designer. However, after a year and a half of studying, I realized this was not the major for me. I took a semester off to try some different things. I worked in a variety of jobs, from lobster man to electrician, picking up loads of miscellaneous skills along the way. I discovered that I liked solving problems… not math equations, but real life problems and finding solutions for them. Through this avenue, I heard about Industrial Design. I came up to Boston where I sat in on a class for a day, and fell in love with the major. I applied and was accepted.

Outside of school, I am a Specialist at the Boylston Street Apple Store, as well as a freelance designer in association with Hurley Chandler & Chaffer, a Providence-based advertising company. My plans are to take my employment with Apple as far as it permits me.

What design means to me:

Over the years, I have spent time watching and working with excellent designers in many fields. By growing in and around that environment, I have developed a deep passion for its subjects. Having respect for new ideas and imagining their possibilities, is something that I strive to work by. The development process has taught me so much about the work we do. Being able to look at the world in a whole new light, rethinking the design of today for tomorrow.
